How to Double Cleanse (and Whether You Need To)

Double cleansing means washing your face twice at night: first with an oil-based cleanser, then with a regular water-based one. It sounds extra, but if you wear sunscreen, makeup or both, it’s the easiest way to get everything off without scrubbing.

Why Two Cleansers?

Sunscreen, long-wear makeup and the oil your skin makes all dissolve best in oil. Sweat, dust and everything else wash away with water. An oil cleanser or cleansing balm breaks down the first group; your usual gentle cleanser takes care of the rest. Doing it in two steps means each one can be gentle instead of one harsh cleanser trying to do everything.

How to Double Cleanse

  1. Start dry. Massage a cleansing oil or balm onto dry skin with dry hands for about a minute. This is where makeup and sunscreen melt off.
  2. Emulsify. Add a splash of lukewarm water. The oil turns milky, which helps it rinse away. Rinse well.
  3. Cleanse again. Follow with a gentle gel, cream or foam cleanser for about 30 seconds, then rinse.
  4. Pat dry and move on. Pat, don’t rub, then apply your serum or treatment and moisturizer.

Do You Need to Double Cleanse?

  • Yes, it helps if you wear water-resistant sunscreen, full makeup or long-wear products.
  • It’s optional if you wear little or no makeup. One gentle cleanse at night is enough for many people.
  • Skip it in the morning. A single gentle cleanse, or just water, is plenty.

Tips for Sensitive or Dry Skin

Use lukewarm water, keep the second cleanse short and choose a fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser. If your skin feels tight afterward, your cleanser is too strong, or you only need one step.
